In 2019, Swim Sisters Australia had the pleasure of hosting a @onewaveisallittakes Fluro Friday gathering. This year we're back and this time we're including Yoga by the Beach (to avoid the rain we will be doing the Yoga indoors thanks to Coogee Surf Lifesaving Club who've kindly offered their venue).

After you've relaxed your body and mind with the Yoga we will be facilitating a discussion on what it means to have good mental health with our facilitator Eman. You can choose to listen or actively participate, it's up to you.

Amongst so many communities and particularly in culturally and linguistically diverse communities, a stigma is still attached to discussing mental health - an important element of our daily lives. When such safe spaces are provided, we should take opportunity to open conversations about difficult topics.

Meet our Yoga Instructor for this Friday's 'Yoga by the Beach' May Yacoub @flowwithmay To register for the event, link is in the bio. May has graciously offered to share her yoga journey:

My journey began six years ago when I was pregnant with my first child. During both my pregnancies I would attend prenatal yoga classes to alleviate my sciatica pain and prepare for labour. This hour that I would set aside twice a week forced me to put everything on hold and connect with my breath and in doing so connect with my unborn child. After the chaos of the early years of motherhood I battled with anxiety and shortness of breath. I was a very active mother who over committed and really did not say ‘no’ to anything.

Desperate for a change, I joined some Yoga classes with an instructor who has now become a dear friend of mine. Through her gentle and compassionate way of teaching I was able to experience the benefits of yoga on my mind, body and soul. After several classes I was able to breathe properly again. My body began to crave and yearn for yoga daily. All the time previously spent shopping, brunching and at beauty salons was funnelled into a new type of Self Care. One that allowed my mind, body and soul to flourish. One that brought me back home to me - my inner child, my core and my
true nature.

In order to strengthen my personal practice I undertook my 350HR Yoga teacher training with Balance Yoga Sydney. I still have so much to learn but would love to share this with anyone and everyone that requires it. Whether you come to Yoga to increase flexibility/mobility, as a means to battle mental health problems, to alleviate physical pain or for weight loss - you will achieve your goal and walk away with a lifelong tool.

So, what is Fluro Friday you may be wondering? It’s about providing a much needed safe space to talk about mental health & wellbeing.

Dress up in your brightest outfits/ burkinis/Hijabs possible and we will also have an exciting beachside yoga session with @flowwithmay to bring you some zen.

Fluro makes people smile and it gets people asking important questions, which are normally avoided about mental health.

Everyone is welcome and this is a free event.

When: this Friday at 6:30-8:30pm
Rain, hail or shine. We’ll do yoga in an exposed space if it is raining

Meet Sarah Elzamtar!

When she first heard that our group did their ocean swim training at Bondi, she admits she felt a little intimidated. "I thought 'is that place really for us'." On a Saturday she swam in the ocean for the first time in her life alongside Bondi Surf Club @bondisblsc trainers and she was hooked. "It was one of the best things I've ever done - the sense of empowerment it gave me was amazing. I can't wait till next week. You'll always find me at Bondi now."

Now in its third year at Bondi @swimsisterssquad addresses low water safety awareness and swimming ability amongst women in multicultural communities, providing culturally appropriate training.

Another beautiful Sunday morning at Clovelly beach, we meet at 7.30am for a swim, then take time out on the rocks to dry up and enjoy our morning Coffee! by 9.30 we wrap up and head back home for a full Sunday of activities with our families. This is the beauty of the early morning starts in that everyone can take this time out of the day for themselves ♥️

Mid week pool training with Auburn Swim Club to get ocean 🌊 fit for Saturday🏊‍♀️

Auburn swim club training sessions are on Wednesday & Fridays at 7-8pm, and Sunday at 8:30am at Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre. All new participants get access to 4 free trial sessions before signing up to an affordable annual membership.

Please note, this isn’t a learn to swim class and is a training class to improve swim fitness. We know there’s a few people keen to find out about swimming lessons - Swim Sisters isn’t a swim school, but we run programs from time to time depending on grants we receive. The Mums and Bubs program is a 2 in 1 - you get to have a swim lesson or swim on your own + have your baby taken care of AND AND AND your bub also has a dedicated swim lesson.

Meet Dima, our lovely dedicated Sunday morning swim leader 🏊‍♀️

Dina grew up with swimming a part of her and her sisters lives - both in the pool and the ocean. Then, as adulthood came, so did responsibilities and swimming for buried away. Dima knew this was something she needed to tend to when the time was right. And just as she was preparing to get back to swimming, Yusra @adayinthelyfofyus came along with the concept of @swimsisterssquad, Dima’s swimming passion was reignited.

Dima found her place and strength in the swimming world again, taking part in ocean swims, races, and weekly Clovelly sessions despite juggling her career as a radiographer and a busy Mum of two. She looks forward to her salt water therapy every week to recharge her & promised to never bury swimming ever again! As she led her biggest swim group yesterday, Dima’s heart was so full today as she shared her passion with her nearest and dearest - her sisters, best friends, childhood friends, and swim sisters.

Regardless of levels and strengths, they all swam laps, had their coffees on the rocks after and reconnected ..all before 9am to return to their kids 😂 Fully recharged for a funday Sunday - because you can’t give from an empty up! 💪🏻

Just keep swimming!
